About

Getting the record right, one page at a time.

A proofreader and scopist who works the way court reporters do — by the book, on deadline, and to your preferences.

Kristen James, proofreader and scopist, outdoors in a wooded setting

Hi, I’m Kristen James. I’ve been proofreading transcripts for court reporters since 2017 and scoping since 2021, working from the Kansas City area where I live with my husband and three kids.

I trained through Proofread Anywhere and have built my work around one thing: getting the record right. I know a verbatim legal transcript isn’t an essay — the way people actually talk in a deposition is messy, and punctuation carries real weight. I refer to Morson’s English Guide for Court Reporters, Bad Grammar/Good Punctuation, and Merriam-Webster, and I follow your preference sheet on every job so the transcript comes back sounding like yours.

I’ve been a court reporting student since 2023, so I understand your work from the inside.

What I do

CaseCAT proofreading, scoping, and RealTeam are done in CaseCATalyst. PDF proofreading is software-agnostic — it works for any reporter on any CAT software.
